About

I’m Ali, and basically, you’ve heard it all before. I’m your typical thirtysomething latte-sipping ex-web-professional, now with a house, a husband, a minivan, and two fabulous and very little girls. So as not to embarrass them (or myself) I’ve changed their names for the purposes of this blog: Frances is almost 4, and Gloria is 8 months old. They are my more-than-full-time job.

Back in the days before I wiped small snotty noses I grew up in Los Angeles and went to college in New England. In a fit of indecision and with nothing better to do I applied to journalism graduate school and moved to Berkeley to earn my degree. I’m not sure the degree was the perfect fit for me, but Berkeley was. I’ve now been here over ten years and it’s entirely possible I will be sitting on Telegraph selling incense when I’m eighty.

After journalism school I got sucked into the Great Internet Boom and worked in San Francisco for various web companies. I had titles that were increasingly inflated and absurd until one day my company stopped giving us free chair massages and Diet Coke. Soon after that we were all laid off and every company in the area simultaneously realized that they had no need for Directors or Producers or Project Managers or whatever the hell it was that I did anyway.

So I got pregnant.

Now, two kids later, I’m feeling wildly out of touch with the world. I started this blog just to feel like I have a project of my own that does not involve packing Cheerios into small tupperware containers. I realized it was ridiculous for me, internet junkie and virtual community addict, not to have a blog in the first place. And I’m very much looking forward to meeting other parents whose words I have greatly enjoyed reading as I’ve started to venture into the blogosphere.

So please bear with me as I use this new hobby of mine to play with stylesheets and change page designs every five minutes. I fully expect to break everything at least once a day. I am operating on very little sleep: just missing the past 8 months or so.

Enjoy.
